International Milestones (UN, OECD, EU)

3. EU - Milestones in Sustainable Development

The European Union (EU) is a political and economical merger of 25 European countries, with enlargement perspectives. The first step of the EU concerning Sustainable Development was the Cardiff European Council (EC), in 1998 which invited certain Council committees (Transport and Energy, Agriculture, Industry and Development) to develop strategies for the inclusion of environmental protection requirements in their policies.

The European Council (EC) in Lisbon in 2000 defined a strategy and the principal goal, which was to make the EU “the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world“ by 2010. But there were no references made to the environment or to Sustainable Development. The environmental dimension was added in the European Sustainable Development Strategy in 2001 in Gothenburg where it was adopted by the Council.

The Sustainable Development Strategy is the subject of an annual spring report to the European Commission and it is also on the agenda at the Spring European Council.

In 2002, a European knowledge-sharing conference on Sustainable Development Strategies was held. Its aim was to create a self-perpetuating network.
